Volvo Cars were founded in 1927 as a subsidiary company of SKF. In 1935 SKF sold their shares on the stock exchange. The trademark was registered for the first time in 1915, but only a few vehicles were launched until 1927 when the Volvo OV4 was presented. In 1944 was introduced another model, the PV 444, being the smallest Volvo at the time, but a massive success for the company. In 1956 Volvo was also offered to North America. The demand grew, and Volvo opened another factory in 1963 in Canada and another one, again in Sweden in the following year. The second largest production facility was launched in Belgium one year later. In 1989 another plant was opened in Sweden. In the 1970s, Volvo acquired DAF and marketed their cars as Volvo. In the 1980s was launched Volvo 340, which became one of the best-sold vehicles for the decade. Subaru, Lexus, and Acura entered the market and took a significant share out of Volvo, which the company struggles to get back to this day. The company was sold in 1999 for 6.45 billion dollars. They became part of Ford, together with Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Jaguar.
Volvo was a loss for the company for the next decade, and it was sold to Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. In 2016 most of the employees were still living in Sweden. New models were developed and introduced, and a record of one million vehicles sold was set in 2015 for the company. They announced that in 2019, the models introduced would be only with an electric motor, looking forward to being the first such manufacturer. Despite the losses the company has made during some years, they have innovated many products within the automotive industry such as safety belts with different features, bulb integrity sensor, multistage impact absorbing steering column, anti-submarining protection, side impact protection system, Roll Over Protection System, Roll Stability Control, Intelligent Driver Information System, Traffic Accident Research Team, Personal Car Communication, Distance Alert, City Safety system, Pedestrian Detection with Auto-Brake system, pedestrian airbag, Enhanced Blind Spot Information System, Cyclist Detection with Auto Brake system and many more. The concept of the brand has always been safety, and that is also what their logo is used to represent. Today the company possess facilities in about twenty locations worldwide.
